Safety should be your number one priority when camping.  You can wear the most expensive clothes and buy every camping gadget available, but these actions will be erased if you don't follow proper safety when camping.  Proper camping safety not only involves preventing you from breaking a leg, but to also avoiding bug bites.

Thinking about camping safety begins the moment you decide to venture out on a camping trip.  Safety should play an integral role in your camping plans.  First and foremost, take into account the region in which you are going to camping.  What time of year are you camping?  Are you camping in the Rocky Mountains or at a Midwestern lake?  Will you be taking a camping trip during the hot summer days or the frosty winter months?

No matter where you are camping, find out the weather forecast for the days you will be camping.  You can find out this information through your local weather, weather channel, or even online.

The Internet is a great tool to use when you need to find weather in a part of the country that is not covered by your local or regional news sources.

Go beyond the basics of predicted temperatures and clouds/sunshine by also observing the wind, tides, or any other regional weather factors.  Base the clothing you bring on the predicted weather.  Be sure to bring layers of clothing so you can bundle up when it is cold and remove layers when you are warm.

Bring extra clothes in case of an emergency. For example, you don't want to catch a cold from wearing damp or wet clothes.  Don't over pack, but bring extra clothing items just in case.

Bring a first-aid kit in case of any small injuries.  Verify that the kit is complete and up-to-date.  Don't forget sunscreen and bug spray.  Your skin and sanity will suffer greatly if you forget these items.

Pack enough food and water so that you have extra supplies.  The type of food you bring depends on your preferences and intended exercise level.  Are you going to hike during your camping trip?  If you are going to walk, hike, swim, or complete any physical activity then pack high energy foods such as trail mix.  Remember to bring bottled water so you can keep yourself well hydrated.

Along with food you will need the appropriate camping equipment.  The basics include sleeping bags, pillows, tents, cooking utensils, and a grate for a grill.  You may want to bring hiking poles if you are going to explore mountainous terrain.

A safety tip that is often forgotten is to notify friends or relatives of your plans.  Be specific.  Make sure to detail where you are going and for how long.  Provide contact information.  The last thing you want to happen is to suffer an emergency during the camping trip that leaves you immobile.  If nobody knows where you have gone then you might be stranded.

There are several safety tips you should follow when you are enjoying your camping trip.  Setup camp as soon as you arrive at your campsite.  It is important to inform each camper about the layout of your campsite.  Designate a spot where you can meet with your fellow campers if you are ever separated.

You need to be aware of what time the sun will set.  The sun can set quite early during the winter months.  Take this into account when you are away from the campsite as well.  Make sure that you return to your campsite before dark.  Don't push it.  You don't want to be stuck in the woods with just a flashlight leading you home.

Bring bug spray.  This safety recommendation has already been mentioned, but it is worth repeating.  Bugs run rampant in woody and grassy areas.  Watch out for ticks.  Ticks are small bugs that can attach to your skin and even cause Lyme disease.  Read up on any wildlife that will be in your camping area as well.  Are there poisonous snakes in the area?  If so, sticking to the trail will help you avoid bugs as well as snakes.

Following these safety tips will create an enjoyable trip for all.
