Are you thinking of going on a camping trip?  Do you have a pet such as a dog or cat?  Do you want to bring your pet on your camping trip, but are unsure how to make the camping trip safe for your beloved pet?  If these questions are floating around your mind then you are not alone.  Many camping enthusiasts bring their pets along with them on camping trips.  Pets can bring an added comfort and fun to your camping trip.

Following are general actions you should take to prepare your pet for your camping trip.  These recommendations should be modified to fit your pet's needs.  For example, does your pet have diagnosed allergies or physical ailments?  If so, then you will need to plan to continue any previous care while on the camping trip.

First, you will need to ensure that your pet is medically ready for the camping trip.  It is assumed that you would take a pet that is in a healthy state.  Flea and tick medicine is critical for dogs and cats.  Hopefully, you already give your pet flea and tick medicine on a regularly basis.

Ticks also envelope many campsites and you must use tweezers to properly remove a tick.  So add tweezers to your list of items.  You will encounter loads of bugs and you don't want your pet to spend the entire trip scratching.

Humans bring a first aid kit for themselves; why not bring one for your pet as well?  You can find this item in most pet stores.  Place a copy of your pet's medical records in a waterproof plastic bag.  Place this bag in the first aid kit or in a safe place.  It is crucial to have your pet's medical history at hand in case you need to see a vet during the camping trip.  It is a good idea to know the location of veterinarians near your camping area.

After your pet's medical needs are addressed it is time to pack food and water supplies.  Ensure that you have enough pet food, bring extra just in case, that is stored in a sealable waterproof container.  Does your pet have dry food or canned wet food?  If you have canned food then bring a can opener.

Bottled water is helpful while you are hiking.  Bottled water can become cumbersome so bring a large bucket to retrieve water from the campsite area.  Remember that you will need to place the food and water in something, so don't forget food and water dishes.  You can find collapsible dishes at most pet stores.

There is no doubt that your pet will need grooming while on the camping trip.  Bring pet brushes, soap, and towels.  Who knows what your pet can get into in the great wide wilderness!

Your pet should have a collar with the appropriate tags.  Provide contact information on the tags in case you become separated.  Bring a strong leash or two to help keep track of your pet while walking and at the campsite.  Your pet should also have protective clothing and a form of shelter.  You may let them sleep in your tent or provide them with their own tent, bedding and blankets.  Either way, make sure that the living quarters are comfortable for your pet.  Bring familiar toys and bedding to soothe any anxiety your pet might feel.

Other safety items include plastic bags to clean up after your pet along with a dog whistle and reflector that you can attach to your pet's collar.  Lastly, bring toys and treats for your pet to keep happy and healthy.

These are general items recommended to keep your pet safe while camping.  Be prepared and your pet will have a wonderful time!
