Probably the most amazing thing about quilting is also the most intimidating. There are just so many options! From color to size, fabric to pattern, the possibilities are truly endless. But for the new quilter the biggest question is always the same, Where to start? Well my friends, help has arrived. Just follow these few simple steps and introduce yourself to a wonderful new friend.

1. Pick a simple pattern.

Yes, the Texas Lone Star is a gorgeous pattern, but probably not the best place to start. You don’t want to get frustrated with a difficult pattern while still learning the basics. Go for a nine patch, log cabin, or pinwheel for your first try. These are gorgeous classic patterns that are easy to master the basics on.

2. Get the right tools.

I can’t stress this enough! Gone are the days of cutting each square by hand with scissors. By using the right equipment you will save yourself time and have more uniform shapes to piece.

3. Start Small.

A baby quilt, pillow, or wall hanging are all wonderful projects for a beginner. These pieces are less bulky and easier to handle. There is less time between steps and you will experience the gratification that comes with see your finished product. As an added bonus you won’t need to invest in an expensive quilt frame right away as these projects can be done on a hoop.

4. Find a mentor.

If you don’t know anyone who fits the bill, most towns (even small ones) have a wonderful little specialty quilting shop. There will be several ladies there who have done this for years and would love to help you learn. These shops also generally offer fantastic classes for all skill levels. Find one, and make friends!

Quilting is a wonderful fulfilling experience that can bring you a lifetime of joy. Don’t be intimidated by all it has to offer, embrace it. One of the loveliest things about this craft are the people, don’t be afraid to reach out someone will be willing to help!
