Beading is a great hobby.  And most of us find ourselves inexplicably drawn to that aisle of the craft store whether we are a beader or not.  There are just so many pretty shiny little gems and treasures hidden there that it’s hard to pull yourself away.  We completely understand; we’ve been there.  But if you are starting your own obsession it can be very easy to jump off the deep end and arrive home with a big bag of toys that while beautiful don’t do you any good.  Here are a few tips to keep the madness in check and end up with a finished product you are proud of.

First things first, stay focused!  Pick your project, like a necklace or bracelet, and then stick to the battle plan.  Work on finding beads that complement each other and will blend nicely in the finished piece.  Since most beads come in packs or strings you may well end up with enough products to make yourself a whole set.  If you really like the big bold centerpieces, choose that first.  Then lay everything out until you have the perfect combination.  For many beaders, the shopping is just as much fun as the beading.

Now make sure you have the right tools.  Trying to do bead work with shoddy tools is next to impossible.  Perfecting your technique is hard enough without having to fight your tools as well.  Invest in a nice tool set and save yourself the headache.  The upside is that unless you lose one, this is probably the only set you will ever have to buy.

And the last thing is not to be afraid to ask for help.  Most cities have a trendy local bead store with a great staff.  In fact, it is not uncommon to stop by and see several customers sitting around a well lit table working on their own pieces.  These people are usually friendly and fun, and best of all; they can answer any question you might have.  Beading is great; you just have to know where to start.
